The second largest river from Europe (length of 2,840 km), the Danube rises from the Black Forrest Mountains and empties its waters in the Black Sea. The river's route passes 10 countries (Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Republic of Moldavia, Ukraine) and 4 capitals (Viena, Bratislava, Budapest, Belgrade).
Being formed by the unification of three springs: Berg, Brigach and Donau Quelle, as predestination, the Danube River divides itself near the town of Tulcea (Romania) in the three main branches: Chilia, Sulina and Sfantul Gheorghe. Before being untied with the waters of the Black Sea, The Danube forms one of the most spectacular and interesting wet areas in the world - as habitat of aquatic birds.
The exotic land with over 1,200 species of trees and plants that gathers more than 300 species of birds, with over 3,400 species of animals (vertebrates and invertebrates) and 90 species of fishes, the Danube Delta covers a surface of 5,640 skm, being acknowledged by UNESCO in 1990 as "Reservation of the biosphere", "Ramsar area", "Nature's World Patrimony" and in 2000 being awarded the "European Diploma for Protected Areas".
This incredible land of waters offers best conditions for ornithology and wonderful shows given by nature (lakes, floating reed islets, flooded isles) accessible only with small draught boats and under strict guidance of the ones who are aware of the area.
"Nowhere in Europe you shall meet a land with various and numerous living species: butterflies, birds and raccoon dogs, fishes of all sorts, otters and muskrats, wild boars, rabbits and does.
Once you have reached the Danube Delta, it is worthy to assist to the majestic supremacy of swans, to admire the variety of birds that migrate from areas out of Europe: white-tailed eagle, summer swan, large cormorant, common pelican and curly pelican, goose with red neck, large and small white fronted goose, sandpiper, blackhead duck, red and white shelduck, white egret, polar ember goose, gruidae, large curlew, roller, common heron and other birds.
In the same spot, beside weeping willows that seem to be real "sentinels that guard the canals", the reed that covers 180,000 ha represents the largest area in the world. But one of the most enchanting views of the Danube Delta remains the water lilies. These represent true "diamonds of lake banks" – white water lilies and yellow water lilies"
